Bexhill-on-Sea Bass Session 15.04.2022

Bexhill-on-Sea Bass Session 15.04.2022

So, I got an invite from Spike England and a few of his friends to hit the salt at Bexhill on Friday 15.04.2022.

Being a bit unsure of what to expect, what fish were going to be in and which species of those fish would be hungry.

I decided late the night before that I would go and give it a try, the conditions looked spot on and just getting out would be nice after such a long period of crap weather since last autumn.

Waking up at 4am smashed a couple of slices of toast and made a coffee and dragged my ass to the sprinter by 4.15am and began the long journey down to Bexhill.

The roads were fairly quiet, but not as quiet as I would have hoped. I made it down to the car park where we were meeting by 7.15am after a hold upon the bridge.

I said hello to Spike and started getting geared up for the unknown day ahead out on the water.

At 8.10am both Spike and I were all ready and had parked the vans up and headed down the steep stoney beach to the water’s edge.

The water was millpond still and the sun was already out, all we needed now were some fish on the feed and we would be in for an excellent day on the salt.

FINALLY ON THE WAY OUT TO THE BEXHILL REEF

After a short peddle I was out on the reef and my Garmin Echo-Map Ultra 122v with Livescope lit up like a Christmas tree.

But what were they below??

Turns out they were small Herrings being smashed by Tonnes of hungry Sea Bass.

It was on…

I grabbed two of my favourite Bass lures (THANKS FELIX HAY) and started trolling.

I made it around 10 yards before both rods roared off with two hungry Bass smashing the lures.

This went on continuously, as long as we followed the baitfish the Bass kept biting.

Around 1.30pm something changed and the water became alive. Bass was smashing the surface all over chasing the herrings to the surface and going mad.

This was the first time I had witnessed this and it was amazing to watch especially as the water was so clear, I could see the Bass going crazy in huge shoals.

I did my best to record it but it didn’t look as spectacular as it did there first hand.

I hadn’t ever had a day like this…

This went on for a while but soon the Bass moved again and went back down to the depths and continued to chase the herring and other baitfish back down on the reef.

I continued to follow the baitfish around for the rest of the afternoon catching Bass after Bass after Bass. Continuous double takes all day making the fishing really fun.

I hadn’t ever had a day like this…

We fished till around 3.30pm then headed for the shore…

I landed 45 Bass and lost 3 or 4 which is a great hookup to landing ratio and an amazing day trolling lures.

Never could I have imagined how good a days fishing was going to be.

I will have to take up more offers and stop being so sceptical of places and weather.

BIG THANKS TO SPIKE FOR INVITING ME!!!

Can’t wait to return and have another go on the Bass.

Already planning the next expedition

Stayed tuned for more coming soon…
