COVERACK MEET 17.09.2021

Day 2 of the trip.

Day one of the fishing.

We woke up early to a fresh and misty morning. The wind had picked up a little overnight and the conditions were not ideal to start the day.

Barry and I scouted out a few potential spots, which were all pretty poo with conditions we had been dealt.

We settled on Porthallow because it has a cove that is tucked away down below some high cliffs, which would give us a nice sheltered place to hide from the wind.

The wind was due to drop overnight giving us ideal conditions for Saturday’s fishing out on the Manacles with Felix and Stephen Hill.

Adamant we were going to get out and hit the salt we got the yaks ready and all our gear on and got the yaks down to the water’s edge.

The water in the covered area was pretty flat and looked very fishable.

We just needed there to be some fish in the area to target. Barry and I set off out onto the water looking for fish on the display to try and target.

Neither of us could find any fish not even shoals of mackerel or baitfish in the area of cover we had to fish.

So we decided to try and anchor up and hope some fish would follow the scent trail and come in and find our baits on the bottom.

Nice stinky mackerel strips with squid combo were my choice.

We anchored up for a couple of hours with no hint of a fish.

Not even a dogfish.

“Times were hard”

So we went back to lure fishing.

I managed to catch a passing Bass which was nice after not even having a nibble for such a long time.

FINALLY OFF THE MARK WITH THIS LOVELY BASS

After catching that bass and knowing there were some here in the area somewhere I decided to leave Barry and head out into the choppy water alongside the rocks fishing in around 15-20ft of water trolling a couple of Bass lures behind me.

Within 5 mins of being out in the chop amongst the rocks i got my second Bass and i knew i had located some fish.

SECOND BASS LANDED

SECOND BASS LANDED

I gathered my composure and started trolling again further along the in the same depth of water around the rocks.

Bang another Bass on and swiftly landed to the kayak for carefully unhooking and releasing unharmed.

THIRD BASS LANDED

THIRD BASS LANDED

Turning around and passing back over the same marks on the way back to barry i hooked two more Bass making my total now 5 Bass hooked and landed.

I knew where the fish were

I planned on repeating the above tactics again to try and hook some more but as I finished the return pass Barry decided he’d had enough which was fair enough and we headed in for a well deserved cuppa and some warm food.

BASS NUMBER FIVE

We packed all our gear away and headed back to base.

I was very happy with the 5 Bass I had caught and had added some well-needed experience to my arsenal for finding and locating Bass which was a fairly new species to me.

The first day on the salt went as well as it could have done I think with the weather we were dealt on the day.

We made some food and had a few drinks before heading to bed.

I didn’t get a lot of sleep, eagerly anticipating the next day fishing With Barry, Felix, Stephen and myself.
